Excision of Skin Problems at Big Sky Dermatology

Excision is the general term used to describe removal of skin cancer along with some of the healthy skin tissue around it (called the “margin”). We use a local anesthetic to numb the area. After we remove the cancerous area, we close the incision with stitches.

The most common type of excision is called an elliptical excision. We design the ellipse so the resulting scar runs parallel to an existing skin crease. This places a wound under less tension and orients the scar so it is less noticeable. A shave excision is a simple procedure we use to remove lesions, tumors, moles and other growths on the skin with a sharp razor. We then soothe the excision site with antibiotic ointment or Vaseline to promote healing.

"This appointment was my first ever visit with a dermatologist. I wanted to get a couple of spots looked at and get a baseline on my overall skin health. Dr. Shannon was very gentle and explained everything she was doing. She answered my questions to my satisfaction."
